Welcome to the last week of January B&B VIPs! Christmas seems like a distant happy memory and the year is already marching forward with an equal mix of excitement and anticipation of what's to come in 2025.
Here at Barnaby & Boo's we're obivously counting the days until the sun comes out and there's ice cream to enjoy.... but in the mean time it's been fantastic to see so many of you braving the elements, alone or with family in tow, to pop and enjoy our little cafe!
We sadly waved goodbye to my brother and his family a couple of weeks ago as they returned to Wellington. It was wonderful to share Christmas with them after many years but saying goodbye was hard.
If you're struggling with the come down after Christmas, saying goodbye to family and friends and trudging around the neighbourhood in the driving rain and wind don't forget the words of Albert Camus...
"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer”
Dig deep friends. Brighter day are coming soon.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

Did you know? The Tale of the First Toastie

Long ago, in a bustling industrial town in England, there lived a factory worker named Henry. Henry worked long, grueling hours and often packed a simple lunch of bread and cheese. One chilly afternoon, as he sat in the breakroom, staring at his uninspired meal, an idea sparked.
Henry’s workplace had a small wood-burning stove used to heat tea kettles. Driven by curiosity and hunger, he wrapped his bread and cheese in a scrap of tin and placed it on the stove. Moments later, the smell of warm, melting cheese filled the room. His coworkers gathered around, intrigued. When Henry unwrapped his creation, the bread was golden and crisp, the cheese gooey and warm. He took a bite, and the toastie was born.
Word of Henry’s creation spread quickly. Soon, others began experimenting, adding leftover ham or vegetables to their bread-and-cheese sandwiches before toasting them. The makeshift tin method evolved as clever inventors created cast-iron toasting irons. Families across the country began making their own toasties, each adding unique ingredients to suit their tastes.
During World War II, toasties became a comforting staple. With limited ingredients available due to rationing, bread, cheese, and occasional slices of ham or bacon turned into practical, satisfying meals. Soldiers, workers, and families alike embraced the toastie as a symbol of warmth and simplicity.
As years passed, the humble toastie grew into a worldwide phenomenon. Cafés began serving gourmet versions with adventurous fillings like artichokes, cranberry sauce, or spicy chutneys. Yet, every bite of a toastie carries a little bit of Henry’s original discovery - a tale of ingenuity, hunger, and the magical pairing of bread and cheese.
And so, the toastie lives on, warming hearts and filling stomachs across the globe including right here at Barnaby & Boo's!
