Which Spring Flowers Bloom First in London: A Schnauzer's Guide to Nature's Awakening
Woof woof, friends! Barnaby here, your favorite miniature schnauzer from Barnaby and Boo's Ice Cream and Coffee Parlour in New Malden! I've been busy sniffing out the first signs of spring, and boy oh boy, do I have some exciting news to share with my two-legged and four-legged pals!
The First Sniffable Spring Blooms in London
My sensitive schnauzer nose has detected these early spring bloomers popping up around our London walkies spots:
SNIFF SNIFF Snowdrops are always first on my detection list! Sometimes these white little droplets appear as early as January. I've spotted them pushing through frosty ground on my morning walks, even when my paws are still chilly!
TAIL WAG Winter aconites come next with their bright yellow flowers. They remind me of the lemon ice cream at our parlour (which humans can enjoy, but sadly not us pups).
EXCITED BARK Crocuses are my absolute favorites! Purple, yellow, and white patches that make perfect sniffing spots during our park adventures. I've been seeing them all over London's green spaces lately!
PLAY BOW Daffodils are everywhere now! From my special walkies route through St. James's Park to the little gardens in New Malden. Just remember, fellow doggos - no nibbling on these yellow trumpets, they'll give you a tummy ache!
HEAD TILT Hellebores look quite fancy with their nodding flower heads. I like to give them a gentle sniff, very sophisticated like me in my bow tie at the ice cream parlour.
Spring Equinox: More Daylight for Evening Walkies!
The spring equinox happened on March 20th, and do you know what that means? MORE DAYLIGHT FOR WALKIES! We're getting about 4 extra minutes of playtime light every single day. That's almost 30 minutes more outdoor fun each week! No wonder I've been feeling extra bouncy lately.
Dog-Safe Spring Flowers (Very Important Schnauzer Knowledge)
As Barnaby, chief quality control officer at New Malden's favorite ice cream parlour, I take safety very seriously! My human friends need to know which flowers are safe for us curious pups who sometimes like to investigate with our mouths:
Camellias (they look fancy like the people who order our specialty coffee)
Magnolias (big blooms that smell amazing to my schnauzer nose)
Forsythia (yellow like vanilla ice cream but on bushes!)
Pansies (they have faces like they're smiling at me)
Snapdragons (funny name, safe plant)
Roses (fancy schmancy and safe for a sniff)
Please keep us away from daffodils and tulips though - they make doggy tummies very upset!
Will Spring Be Warm Enough for Ice Cream Weather?
After Thursday's gloriously warm day (I got to sit outside B&B's in the sun and greet customers ALL DAY), I'm predicting lots more ice cream weather ahead! My weather-predicting whiskers are sensing a warmer-than-average spring for London, especially here in New Malden. Though we'll still have some shower days where you'll need to dry your paws after walks.
Spring Celebrations Around the World (or "Parties I Wish I Could Attend")
While I'm busy greeting customers at Barnaby and Boo's, spring is being celebrated all over:
Holi in India with colors everywhere - imagine how rainbow-colored my white schnauzer beard would get!
Hanami in Japan with cherry blossom parties - I'd love to nap under a pink tree!
Nowruz with feasts - I'm always ready for a feast, especially if dropped treats are involved!
Easter means chocolate for humans (NEVER for dogs!) but also fun egg hunts that look like great games
May Day with dancing - I do my own special schnauzer dance when it's walkies time!
So come visit us at Barnaby and Boo's in New Malden, where this miniature schnauzer will give you the warmest spring welcome! And while you're enjoying your coffee or ice cream, I'll be keeping an eye out for the next spring flowers to report on. Woof woof for spring!
Licks and tail wags, Barnaby
